Sometimes it is asked out of impatience to get back to normal, and sometimes out of the opposite wish, that what you lived through will not fade. In both cases the honest answer is the same: it depends, and there is no timetable.

Even so, it is possible to describe typical phases, factors that lengthen or shorten the process and, above all, signs for knowing whether you are heading in the right direction. That is what this article is about.

The short answer

The most active part of integration is usually concentrated in the first few weeks. From then on, the process becomes slower and less visible, and it can go on for months. Some experiences keep giving you food for thought for years.

There is no end point at which everything has been integrated. What there is instead is a moment when the experience stops occupying center stage and becomes part of your story, without urgency.

The most common phases

They are a rough guide. Not everyone goes through all of them, or in this order.

The first 72 hours

Tiredness, sensitivity, emotions close to the surface. Sometimes euphoria, sometimes bewilderment. It is a time to rest, write down what you remember and not decide anything. Interpreting is still premature.

The first month

This is the period when the experience is still most alive. A systematic review of the afterglow compiles the effects observed between one day and one month after taking classic psychedelics, including improvements in mood and well-being and greater openness. It is when changing something is easiest, and also when the risk of making hasty decisions is highest.

Around the second or third week a slump is common: the glow fades, routine returns and doubt creeps in about whether it was real or did any good. It is not a step backward. It is the shift from the experience to the work.

One to six months

What you experienced is put to the test by real life. The changes that hold begin to show in concrete things. Others fall away, and that is fine. Sometimes new material appears: memories, emotions or insights that were not clear at the beginning.

In the long term

The experience becomes a reference point you return to from time to time. It can take on a different meaning when your circumstances change. It no longer demands attention, but it is still available.

What lengthens and what shortens the process

The intensity of the experience. The more it stirred up, the more time it asks for.

Whether it was difficult. In a study of 608 people who had extended difficulties, a harder experience during the trip was associated with longer-lasting difficulties afterward. Around a third still had them more than a year later.

The support available. Having someone to talk to shortens it. Isolation lengthens it.

The stage of life you are in. Integrating in the middle of a move, a breakup or a period of heavy work is slower.

What was touched. An experience that opens up grief or a deep-seated issue follows the pace of that issue, not that of the experience.

Using again soon. A new experience on top of another that has not been digested tends to blur the two and prolong both.

Signs that you are making progress

They are usually unspectacular:

You think about the experience less often and with less charge.

You can tell it in an orderly way, without becoming overwhelmed or embellishing it.

You sleep and function normally.

There is at least one concrete change that holds without heroic effort.

The way you relate to others has improved in some respect, and other people notice.

You tolerate uncomfortable emotions better.

You feel no urgency to repeat it.

The questions that were left open no longer unsettle you, even if they remain unanswered.

The last one is important. Making progress is not resolving everything, it is being able to live with what does not get resolved.

Signs that you are stuck

You keep going over the same thing, with the same intensity, weeks later.

You have understood a lot and nothing has changed.

You feel that normal life is gray compared with that, and all you think about is going back.

You avoid the subject completely and it upsets you when someone mentions it.

You string together experiences, retreats or readings without pausing on any of them.

You use what you experienced to avoid looking at a specific problem. We explain this in spiritual bypassing: when the experience is used to avoid what hurts.

Getting stuck is not failing. It usually indicates that you need to change tools, for example moving from thinking to doing, or from doing it alone to doing it with someone.

What looks like progress and is not

The euphoria of the first few days. It is pleasant, but it says nothing about what will remain.

Grand declarations. Announcing that everything has changed is easier than changing one thing.

Absolute certainty. Feeling that you have now understood everything is usually a phase, not a conclusion.

Talking about it all the time. Sometimes it replaces the work instead of accompanying it.

How to review your own process

Once a month, during the first few months, spend half an hour answering in writing:

What remains alive from the experience?

What has changed in my day-to-day life since then?

What is still pending?

What do I need now: more reflection, more action, more rest or more company?

If you keep a log, compare it with the previous month’s notes. There are specific exercises in integration exercises: journaling, body, nature and routines.

When it stops being a matter of time

There are situations in which waiting is not the answer. If after a month you still have intense anxiety, insomnia, a sense of unreality or difficulty getting on with your life, a professional assessment is advisable. The signs are described in anxiety or depersonalization after a trip: when to ask for help.

And the next experience, when?

There is no correct time frame, but there is a useful criterion: when the previous one has settled and you can calmly explain what you want another one for. If the answer is that the first one was left half-finished or that you miss how you felt, probably not yet.

Supporting the process

At RILOFU we support integration processes at each person’s own pace, both right after the experience and months later. We do not sell or supply substances.
