It is a place where they can talk about it without having to justify themselves, without scaring anyone and without getting an opinion in reply. Integration circles exist for that.

If you have never been to one, it is normal to have doubts: whether you will have to speak, who goes, whether it is therapy, whether it is a cult. This article explains what they are, how they work and what to expect from your first one.

What an integration circle is

It is a group gathering, guided by one or more people who facilitate, in which participants share experiences with non-ordinary states of consciousness and what those experiences have left them with. People speak in turns and listen without interrupting.

Its value lies in something very simple. Putting the experience into words in front of others helps to make sense of it. And listening to others shows that what is happening to you, however strange it seems, has happened to more people. Analyses of integration practices include circles and community among the basic domains of the process, alongside work with the mind, the body or nature.

What it is not

It is not group therapy. Nobody diagnoses or treats.

It is not a place to use. You attend sober.

It is not somewhere to get substances or contacts for them. In a serious circle, that is expressly excluded.

It is not a space for convincing anyone of a belief or of a way of using psychedelics.

It is not a debate. What another person shares is not up for discussion.

How it works

Each circle has its own style, but the structure tends to be similar:

Welcome. The facilitator introduces the space and goes over the rules.

Opening. Sometimes a moment of silence, a breath or a short round to say your name and how you are arriving.

Sharing round. Whoever wants to, shares. There may be a suggested time per person.

Resonances. In some circles, after each share or at the end, a space opens up to say what the things you heard stirred in you, without giving advice.

Closing. A short final round and, sometimes, some informal time to chat.

It usually lasts between an hour and a half and two hours.

The usual rules

They are what make the space safe. If they are not stated at the start, ask.

Confidentiality. What is shared in the circle stays in the circle.

Speaking in the first person. About your own experience, not about theories or what others should do.

Listening without interrupting.

Not giving advice or interpreting others, unless they ask for it.

The right to pass. Nobody is obliged to speak.

Respect for all experiences and belief frameworks.

No substances, neither during the circle nor as something to exchange.

Who it is for

For anyone who has had a recent experience and wants to make sense of it.

For anyone who went through something a long time ago and has never talked about it.

For anyone who had a difficult experience and does not want to feel alone with it.

For anyone who is considering an experience and wants to listen before deciding.

For anyone who supports others and wants to learn by listening.

You do not need to have taken anything to attend. Some people come because of experiences with meditation, breathwork or life crises.

When it is not enough

A circle is not the right place, at least as your only source of support, if you are in an acute crisis: very intense anxiety, several nights without sleep, ideas you cannot get any distance from or thoughts of harming yourself. In those cases professional care is needed. The signs are covered in anxiety or depersonalization after a trip: when to ask for help. A good facilitator will tell you if they notice it.

What to expect from your first one

Nerves when you arrive. Almost everyone has them, including people who have been going for years.

A mix of people. Very different ages, professions and reasons. Less of a stereotype than you imagine.

Nobody is going to pressure you. You can spend the whole gathering listening.

Stories that resonate with you and others that do not. Both are useful.

Perhaps emotion. It is common to be moved by another person’s story, or by hearing yourself say something out loud for the first time.

No definitive answers. People tend to leave with more calm than conclusions.

It is common for the first one to leave you wanting more or with an odd feeling. Give it two or three before deciding whether it is for you.

How to prepare

Think about what you would like to share, without writing yourself a script. One idea or one moment is enough.

If you do not want to speak, that is fine. Decide there.

Arrive early. Walking in once the circle has started is uncomfortable for everyone.

Go sober and rested.

Set aside some quiet time for afterward. Sometimes things get stirred up.

If what you want to share is a difficult experience, it may help to sort out your thoughts beforehand with how to integrate a bad trip weeks or months later.

How to recognize a good circle

Good signs:

The rules are explained clearly at the start.

The facilitator keeps an eye on timing and makes sure nobody dominates or gets interrupted.

There is room for difficult experiences and doubts, not only for luminous stories.

Use is neither promoted nor idealized.

The limits of the space, and when to see a professional, are talked about openly.

Warning signs:

Substances, ceremonies or contacts are offered.

The facilitator interprets other people’s experiences or presents themselves as someone with answers.

There is pressure to speak, to come back or to sign up for other services.

Medical or psychological care is discouraged.

Only one way of understanding what happened is accepted. On that risk, read spiritual bypassing: when the experience is used to avoid what hurts.

In person or online

Both formats work. In person makes it easier to build trust and allows for what happens before and after, in informal conversation. The online format lets people take part who live far away or prefer to start from home. If you can choose, try in person first.

The community in Barcelona

The community linked to RILOFU meets through the Meetup group Barcelona Psychedelic Society, where upcoming circles and gatherings are posted. You can see the dates and sign up from there. On the community page we explain how we understand these spaces.

The circles do not include substances. At RILOFU we do not sell or supply substances in any context.

And if you would rather start on your own

A circle is not for everyone or for every moment. If what you need right now is a one-to-one space, we offer individual support.
