Others turn them into the only possible compass. At RILOFU neither stance convinces us. Emotions are not the enemy, nor are they the final truth: they are information. Sometimes clear, sometimes confusing, almost always valuable.

Home / Explore / Emotions

This page is an invitation to look at emotions with more curiosity and less hurry. It’s the second of the territories we explore, alongside the mind, consciousness, relationships, non-ordinary states and the meaning of experience.

What emotions are

In psychological terms, an emotion is a relatively brief and intense response that involves several things at once: changes in the body (the heart speeding up, the stomach tightening, the shoulders tensing), a tendency to act in a certain way (approach, flee, attack, freeze) and an appraisal of the situation, often so fast we don’t even register it.

Emotions evolved because they were useful. Fear protects us from danger, anger helps us defend our boundaries, sadness invites us to withdraw and recover, joy reinforces what does us good. The problem isn’t feeling them. The problem appears when they fire in contexts where they no longer serve, when they become chronic, or when we don’t know what to do with them.

Emotion, feeling and mood

Although in everyday language they’re used as synonyms, it helps to tell them apart. The emotion is the immediate response. The feeling is the conscious, more elaborate experience of that emotion, when we give it a name and weave it into our story. Mood is a more diffuse and prolonged affective tone that doesn’t always have an identifiable cause.

Telling them apart helps because each one is worked with differently. A spike of anxiety that lasts a few minutes is not the same as a sense of discouragement that has been settled in for weeks.

What we do with emotions

Most of us have learned, one way or another, to do one of three things with what we feel.

Repress it: push it aside, distract ourselves, act as if it weren’t there. It works in the short term and usually takes its toll in the medium term.

Get swept away by it: turn the emotion into immediate action, unfiltered. Say what we didn’t mean to say, make decisions we later regret.

Rationalise it: explain everything, analyse it to exhaustion, but without ever really feeling it. A sophisticated way of not being there.

At RILOFU we propose a fourth, less spectacular way: feel what’s there, observe it, understand what it’s pointing to and decide, from there, what to do with it. It isn’t a trick. It’s a practice, and like any practice it takes time, repetition and, sometimes, company.

Exploring emotions at RILOFU

Understand them

Just as with the mind, knowing how emotions work changes your relationship with them. Knowing that the body reacts before thought does, that emotions have a curve that rises and falls, that you can’t choose to feel them but you can choose how to respond, is already a relief for many people. A good part of our educational content, in courses and on the blog alike, goes in that direction.

Feel them in the body

Emotions don’t live in the head. They live in the body. That’s why practices like conscious breathing, body awareness or meditation are such useful tools: they let you locate the emotion, stay with it for a moment without acting, and let it run its course.

It may sound simple. It isn’t. Most of us have a fairly low tolerance for emotional discomfort and run away as soon as it appears. Learning to stay is probably one of the most transformative skills there is.

Share them

Some emotions can’t be processed alone, or at least not fully. Shame, for instance, feeds on secrecy and dissolves when someone listens without judging. That’s why RILOFU isn’t only a space for one-to-one support but also a community with gatherings and sharing circles where what you feel can be put into words in front of other people who are exploring the same thing.

Difficult emotions and intense experiences

There are moments when emotions overflow. A bereavement, a break-up, a crisis of meaning, a sudden life change. And there are experiences, like those that happen in non-ordinary states of consciousness, that can bring emotional material to the surface after years of being stored away.

In these cases, intensity isn’t necessarily a sign that something is wrong. It’s often a sign that something is moving. But moving without direction can be disorienting, and that’s where support and integration make sense: not to take away what you feel, but to help you understand it and find its place in your life.

Emotions aren’t always right

A warning we think matters. An emotion being intense doesn’t mean it’s accurate. You can feel enormous fear about something that poses no real danger. You can feel absolute emotional certainty and be completely wrong.

That’s why at RILOFU we hold a stance of respect and, at the same time, critical thinking towards what we feel. Listen to the emotion, yes. Obey it without question, not necessarily. That balance between honouring what you feel and not automatically turning it into truth is one of the pillars of how we understand working with emotions and, more broadly, with the meaning we give to our experiences.

Questions to take with you

Which emotion do you find hardest to tolerate, and what do you usually do to avoid feeling it? Where in your body do you notice anxiety, anger or sadness? When was the last time you shared something you were ashamed of with someone? Which emotion keeps coming back in your most important relationships?

You don’t need to answer them now. It’s enough to start looking.

How to keep exploring

Emotions are better understood when placed in relation to the other territories we explore at RILOFU: the mind, consciousness, relationships, non-ordinary states and the meaning of experience.

And if what you’re feeling right now asks for something more than reading, here are two paths.

Learn about the supportJoin the community

[/et_pb_code][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

[et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.4.1″ custom_padding=”0px||0px||true|false”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.4.1″ width=”100%” max_width=”100%” custom_padding=”0px||0px||true|false” custom_margin=”0px||0px||true|false”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.4.1″][et_pb_code _builder_version=”4.4.1″] Explore Emotions: what you feel is also telling you something Some people treat emotions as a problem to solve.
