mind: the place we look at everything else from

Everything you live goes through your mind. What you remember, what you fear, what you decide, what you take for granted without noticing. And yet most of us spend years without asking how that instrument we use to interpret absolutely everything actually works.

Home / Explore / The mind

At RILOFU, the mind is the first of the territories we explore. Not because we have a definitive map, but because any other path, whether it’s emotions, consciousness or non-ordinary states, begins here.

What we mean by the mind

When we talk about the mind we don’t mean only the brain, although it certainly has a lot to do with it. We mean the set of processes that let us perceive, think, remember, imagine, anticipate, feel and make sense of what happens.

Psychology has spent more than a century studying these processes: attention, memory, language, learning, decision-making. Neuroscience has added another layer, showing how those processes rest on neural networks, neurotransmitters and activation patterns. And philosophy keeps asking the uncomfortable question underneath: what is the relationship between that biological activity and the subjective experience of living it?

None of these disciplines has the complete answer. That’s why at RILOFU we prefer to get the three of them talking rather than picking one and discarding the rest.

The mind doesn’t reflect reality: it builds it

One of the most useful ideas you can take from psychology is that your mind doesn’t work like a camera recording what’s out there. It works more like an editor that constantly selects, trims, fills in and reinterprets.

What you perceive is filtered by your attention. What you remember is rebuilt every time you recall it. What you believe about yourself rests on stories you started telling yourself a long time ago and rarely revisit. Even what you feel is shaped by how you interpret the situation.

This doesn’t mean everything is an illusion or that nothing is real. It means that between the world and you there is an active process of construction, and that this process can be observed, questioned and, to some extent, changed.

Biases, habits and automatic responses

A large part of mental activity runs on autopilot. We make quick decisions using shortcuts that generally work but sometimes lead us to the wrong conclusions. We repeat thought patterns we learned in contexts that no longer exist. We react before we realise we’re reacting.

Knowing these automatic responses doesn’t remove them, but it opens a small gap between stimulus and response. And that gap is where any real process of change begins.

Why explore the mind at RILOFU

You might think that to explore the mind it’s enough to read about it. It’s a good start, but it falls short. The mind isn’t only understood: it’s also experienced.

At RILOFU we approach the exploration of the mind from three angles that complement each other.

Understand

Education is the foundation. Understanding how attention, memory, thought and beliefs work gives you a vocabulary to name what’s happening to you. And naming something is the first step to relating to it differently. That’s why we organise talks, courses and workshops, and why the RILOFU blog devotes a good part of its content to psychology and consciousness.

Observe

Practices like meditation and contemplation let you look at the mind from the inside. Not to empty it or reach any special state, but to become familiar with how it works: how thoughts appear, how they chain together, how they dissolve, how they pull your attention towards the past or the future.

Over time, observing the mind changes your relationship with it. You stop identifying so much with every passing thought and start seeing thoughts for what they are: mental events, not absolute truths.

Accompany

Some things can’t be worked out alone. When the mind gets stuck in loops, when the stories you tell yourself hurt you, or when an intense experience has left you without a frame to interpret it, support offers a space to look more clearly and find your own answers.

The mind and non-ordinary states of consciousness

One of the most fascinating things about the mind is that its usual way of working isn’t the only one possible. Dreaming, deep meditation, trance, intense breathwork or, in certain contexts, psychedelics, show that the mind can operate in radically different ways.

These states are valuable precisely because they dismantle the feeling that our everyday way of perceiving is the only real one. At the same time, they call for caution: an intense experience can illuminate aspects of the mind that were hidden, but it can also create confusion if there’s no preparation, no context and no integration afterwards.

If this path interests you, on the page about non-ordinary states we go deeper into what they are, what they can offer and how to approach them responsibly.

Mind, emotions and relationships: one system

It’s tempting to treat the mind as a separate compartment, but that’s not how it works. What you think affects what you feel, and what you feel shapes what you think. And both happen, almost always, within a relational context: with your family, your partner, your friends, your work, your culture.

That’s why exploring the mind at RILOFU almost inevitably leads to exploring emotions and relationshipstoo. They’re different doors into the same house.

A few questions to start with

You don’t need to have the answers. In fact, exploring the mind usually begins with uncomfortable questions that never quite get resolved:

How much of what I believe about myself have I ever actually checked? Which thoughts come back most often, and where do they take me? When was the last time I changed my mind about something important? What goes on in my mind when I’m not busy?

These aren’t questions to answer today. They’re questions to carry with you.

How to keep exploring

The mind is a good starting point, but it isn’t the only one. At RILOFU we propose six territories that constantly cross over: the mind, emotions, consciousness, relationships, non-ordinary states and the meaning we give to our experiences.

You can go through them in any order. And if at some point you’d rather not do it alone, here are two ways to continue.

Learn about the supportJoin the community

[/et_pb_code][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

[et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.4.1″ custom_padding=”0px||0px||true|false”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.4.1″ width=”100%” max_width=”100%” custom_padding=”0px||0px||true|false” custom_margin=”0px||0px||true|false”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.4.1″][et_pb_code _builder_version=”4.4.1″] Explore The mind: the place we look at everything else from Everything you live goes through your mind.
